Windows Versions
(information correct as at July 2015)
Windows
95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (and earlier
versions of Windows) are no longer seen much at all.
There may be a few PCs still running these versions but
they should be replaced as soon as possible.
One of
the longest-lasting, stable versions, Windows XP is
still seen fairly regularly. Microsoft have ended
support for XP so computers still running this version
should also be replaced.
Windows
Vista (much like Windows ME) was a short-lived,
bug-ridden version which is still seen from time to
time. If you are running a computer with Vista you
should have it replaced soon.
Windows
7 is still a fairly commonly used Operating System.
Microsoft still offers support for this version and it
can still (in its Pro version) be purchased with new
computers. It is still a good choice for any computer
you purchase.
Windows
8 and 8.1 are the most recent versions currently
available and most computers currently sold will have
this operating system loaded. Many of the cheaper
machines do not have drivers for any version available.
These versions of Windows have not been popular with
many users, mostly due to the vastly different user
interface introduced by Microsoft to allow for touch
screen driven applications. There are a number of
simple, free 3rd party apps which can give you a more
'normal', menu driven user interface and Windows 8 and
8.1 operate fairly 'normally' using these apps.
Windows
10 (released at the end of July 2015) is the
latest version coming out of the Microsoft stable.
All
legal versions of Windows 7 and 8 are eligible for a
free upgrade to Windows 10. This upgrade must be claimed
by July 2016. Note that this free upgrade requires a large download (3GB or more) that
can deplete your data
bundle resulting in a high data cost to you due to you
exceeding your existing data bundle (many cell phone
data bundles only allow you 1GB or less per month).
